Chapter 15 - Elven Scalp Massage

“They play and laugh, and Gray’s patience is shown,

For our Meeko, his love has surely grown.

With joy I watch, my heartbeats so tender,

But sister’s memory…still burns me like an ember.”

- An excerpt from Narya’s diary

W hen we arrived at the farm moments later, I was struck by a strong desire to tuck both pointy-eared girls into bed, but there was a bit of labor to be done first. Earlier in the day. The mattress and frame had been covered with a tarp—no doubt Narya’s doing, as she couldn’t move the bed inside by herself.

As we arrived at our front stoop, I decided to show off, and set Narya down. I waved off her attempt to follow me to where the bed was propped against the outer wall of the homestead. Although Strength was my lowest stat, watching Red Jack with his antics tonight made me want to show off a little too. I’d refrained because I didn’t want to stand out as much as I already did. But it was just my ‘family’, so why not?

Tapping into my Body stat, I lifted the bed by myself with ease, earning a gasp from the elfmaid and an impressed cackle from Meeko, who was still on my back.

“Wow! Are all Necroplanters so strong?” Narya asked, her voice hushed with awe.

“I wouldn’t know,” I replied. “Never met another one.”

I brought the bed inside and noted with great relief that the interior smelled fresh—even floral. Narya had apparently done some redecorating while I was gone in the forest. There were several vases filled with flowers of every kind that one could readily find around the farm: lilies, daisies, marigolds, and a few others I wasn’t savvy enough to identify or put a name to. I shook my head. I was going to be a farmer. Perhaps understanding the names of plants or studying up on seasonal crops would be a very important long-term goal.

The floors had been scrubbed, the furniture and all surfaces dusted. By now, the dirtiest thing in the room would be the bed and its old sheets. Narya said these ones were fresh, but we’d have to replace those eventually too—I couldn’t have Meeko and Narya continue sleeping in old bedsheets once used by a dead man—well, before he was dead, but still.

I reached up and plucked the skinny child off my shoulders and placed her delicately on the mattress. “There you go,” I said as I lifted the quilt and pulled it over her body.

“Meeko not tired,” she rasped.

“You were just asleep a few minutes ago,” I grumbled at her, poking her gently on the nose. “Harness whatever allowed you to do that.”

The tiny half-elf shook her head and crossed her arms. “Meeko want water.”

I produced my canteen from my rucksack and uncorked it, handing it to the cute Wildsoul. I watched, unable to suppress my amusement as she glug-glugged it down and handed it back with an “Ahhhh!” sound of refreshment.

“Is that all, love?”
